The Scarab School is the school from the Tinghassane community, in Mali. In 2011 A4C committed to supporting the school by paying the running costs. Learn more about this special school and the way A4C is involved.
#160 of 169 least developed countries in the world. (United Nations Development Programme)
Tinghassane was a village in Mali, with a population of 1,225 inhabitants. Due to the civil war, the whole community found refuge in Mauritania.
Vision from the Touareg of Tinghassane
“Our vision is to continue to create an excellent Touareg school and a cultural vocational learning institution. We want to prepare them for the future and to dream about how they can support themselves, our strong cultural heritage and our cultures future development in these changing times. We want to provide them with an education that is integrated into their lives and gives them the necessary capacities to go beyond the desert.”
The Touareg inhabit the Saharan regions of North Africa - Niger, Mali, Libya, Algeria and Burkina Faso. Touareg is an Arabic term meaning abandoned by God. They call themselves Imohag, translated as free men. Their numbers are unclear, but estimates run between 300,000 and 1 million.
Originally situated in Tinghassane, Mali about 35 km from Timbuktu. The community managed to maintain the school and carry on with education in their camp. 65 children actively attend, between the ages of 6 and 14.
A4C would like to thank you to help fund this project!
Why is A4C sponsoring Scarab?
In 2012, A4C agreed to sponsor the scarab school to give this Touareg community the means to achieve their vision.
Scarab was a more risky project, even for us. We recognized it but also saw the potential of it. The leaders of the projects have been true to their words and we are happy to support them, especially during the tough times they are going through.
We need your support
With all the projects we support, there is always more there can be done. Perhaps you have something that can be donated that may help them. This depends from project to project but can include: time, equipment, (school) materials, involvement or long term commitment from you or your company. Contact us if you want to help.
